EDF granted planning permission for UK gas-fired power plant

Utility EDF Energy has received planning consent from the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to build a 1.8 GW gas-fired power station in Lincolnshire in the east of the country.

The combined-cycle Sutton Bridge B plant will sit adjacent to EDF’s existing 819 MW Sutton Bridge plant (pictured), which was commissioned in 1999 and is also gas-fired. The company said the two plants will not share facilities.

A planning application for the project was originally submitted in 2005, EDF said in a statement, with an amended version submitted in 2013. Among the amends were upping the plant’s capacity from 1.26 GW to 1.8 GW; switching to more modern, higher efficiency gas turbines; removing the plant’s capability to run on oil, and thus the need for oil storage tanks; and a possible switch from air cooling to hybrid cooling, using water from a nearby river. EDF said the proposed change to the cooling system will be subject to the results of environmental and feasibility studies.

Although the planning hurdle has been passed, EDF said the project “remains subject to an investment decision. The timing for this is dependent upon a number of factors, including progressing other aspects of the project and market and regulatory developments and has not been determined at this time.”
