Gas-fired gensets to power Bangladesh steel factory

Rolls-Royce is set to deliver eight gas-fired gensets to power Bangladesh’s largest steel production facility.

The company said the gensets will provide 50 MW of power to Bangladesh’s Abul Khair group, which is expanding its production of cold rolled steel sheet coils and coil galvanizing in Chittagong, in the southeast of the country.

The power will be used on-site, and the Abul Khair group said it plans to use the exhaust gas for steam production in future.

The gensets are based on Rolls-Royce’s medium speed 20-cylinder B35:40 gas engines, made by Bergen Engines, and are scheduled to be commissioned in the first half of 2016.

In addition to delivery of the gensets, Rolls-Royce said it has signed a two-year service agreement with the Abul Khair group’s sister company, Abul Khair Steel & Power, which includes spare parts supply.

“In view of growing domestic demand we are going to increase our cold rolled steel production capacity. In order to ensure a reliable production process based on high efficiency and low lifecycle costs we decided for Rolls-Royce gas engine-based efficient gensets to deliver the electrical power for the plant,” the Abul Khair group’s CEO said in a statement.
