288 MW Baltic 2 wind farm officially opens

Utility EnBW has announced the official opening of the 288 MW Baltic 2 wind farm, which is located 32km north of the German coast.

The company celebrated the opening in Sassnitz, the base port for construction of the wind farm, which lies off the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea.

The progression paves the way for a 49.89 per cent divestment of EnBW’s shares in the wind farm to Australia’s Macquarie Capital for €720m, as announced earlier this year.
Esvagt’s 83.7-metre new offshore wind service operations vessel Esvagt Froude has begun a five-year contract to service the wind farm and transport personnel for operation and maintenance.

Offshore construction started in 2013, with the HGN joint venture – Hochtief Solutions, GeoSea and Nordsee Naßbagger – responsible for foundations. Jack-up vessel Svanen installed 39 monopiles, while Goliath tackled piles for 41 jackets.

HGN also transported and installed the 80 Siemens SWT 3.6 120 turbines. The substation, jointly built by Alstom and Weserwind, was installed in September 2014.

The facility will generate electricity for about 340,000 households annually.

In his welcoming speech, the EnBW CEO Frank Mastiaux stressed: "We want to expand renewable energy as a key pillar of our business. The commissioning of EnBW Baltic 2 is another milestone in implementing our EnBW 2020 strategy. And further evidence that the restructuring of the energy supply in the direction of decentralization and renewable energy is irreversible, not only in Germany but worldwide.”

“A strong EnBW team in Hamburg and Baden-Württemberg and our partners have made this success possible. We aim to build on in the coming years, creating further wind farm projects at sea. Currently, we have three more offshore wind farms with a total of 1,600 MW in the North Sea in the project pipeline. "
