Siemens to modernise Indian grid

The cities of Amritsar, Jallandhar, Ludhiana, Dehradun, and Faridabad in northern India will benefit from a grid modernisation scheme being undertaken by Siemens.

The upgrade of the energy distribution grid of the respective cities has been initiated by the three state utilities of Punjab State Power Corporation, Uttarakhand Power Corporation, and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam.

According to the terms of the €11m order, Siemens (NYSESI) will be deploying its Spectrum Power network control system for the upgrades.

The firm plans to equip the grid with supervisory control and data acquisition / distribution management system (SCADA/DMS) functions, to enable better monitoring and control.

Siemens Energy Management division CEO Jan Mrosik said: "Our SCADA/DMS systems are being successfully used by numerous energy suppliers and grid operators in India, where, among others, our systems reduce the downtimes in the event of blackouts in the grid.

The system will allow for real-time monitoring and control of the grids, minimise energy losses, enable load management, load shedding, and efficient handling of disruptions in the grid and its restoration.
