GE to build 190 MW gas-fired CHP plant in Germany

GE and general contractor Kraftanlagen München (KAM) are set to build a 190 MWe/192 MWth gas-fired combined heat and power plant for German municipal utility Stadtwerke Kiel, GE announced today.

The new plant will replace an existing coal-fired power station, and is planned to supply the region with district heating.

The project will feature 20 of GE’s Jenbacher J920 FleXtra gas engines (pictured), representing the largest order for the engines in the company’s history.

GE said the total efficiency of the engines to be supplied is over 90 per cent, while the electrical efficiency is 45 per cent. The plant is expected to reduce CO2 emissions from the current plant’s 1.8 million tonnes to around 540,000 tonnes.

When completed, the new plant will sell balancing power as well as use an integrated (power-to-heat) electrode boiler during periods when electricity prices are low. Flexibility was a key project requirement, GE said, due to the high amount of wind-generated power on the regional grid. According to the company, the plant’s full capacity can be called up within several minutes.

The project’s initial phase will involve the planning and construction of the pump house to connect to the district heating system, the electrode boiler and a heat storage facility, as well as scheduling and obtaining operating approval for the entire system, including the gas engines. The second phase, which will include construction of the power plant, is expected to begin in May 2016.

Gerrit Koll, business unit leader, energy and power plant technology at KAM, said: “Kraftanlagen München was quick in selecting the right concept and has found the best-suited partner for this project with GE. The new gas-fired thermal power plant in Kiel is a groundbreaking example for the successful realization of the energy transition plan by employing highly efficient combined heat and power generation. We are happy to implement this large-scale project using GE’s Jenbacher gas engines.”
