UK balancing reserve offers stay of execution for gas-fired power plants

Two gas-fired power facilities in England have received a 10 month reprieve, after being awarded a ten month work contract.
Centrica-owned Killingholme and Brigg power stations in Lincolnshire are the beneficiaries with the former being successful in being chosen to be part of National Grid’s Strategic Balancing Reserve (SBR) for 2015-16. Meanwhile Brigg will become a distributed generator providing a direct supply to the local network.

Both gas-fired stations were mothballed in March raising fears over the futures of the remaining 54 staff.
