UK moves forward on CCS

The UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has appointed a subsidiary of energy services firm the Wood Group as one of six technical advisors for its carbon capture and storage (CCS) policy.

The four-year framework agreement between DECC and specialist subsea, pipeline and riser engineering and management contractor Wood Group Kenny (WGK) also includes advisory services for potential CCS projects in the UK.

The agreement “will see WGK support DECC to ensure UK CCS energy policies are underpinned by robust technical evidence and provide independent advice on the technical understanding and review of CCS developments”, WGK said.

WGK is to provide technical insight and design review on aspects including carbon capture, transport and storage; power generation solutions; and novel technology, processes and materials for CCS projects.

Previously, WGK provided front-end engineering design for the subsea and pipeline part of Scotland’s Peterhead CCS project in Aberdeenshire, which is under development by Shell and SSE and is the world’s first full-chain CCS project on a gas-fired power station.

In other CCS news this week, Aberdeen-based consultancy Pale Blue Dot has been awarded €3.5 million ($3.8 million) by the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), under a contract funded by DECC, for a one-year project that aims to deliver five offshore geological CO2 storage sites which will be used to accelerate UK CCS projects beyond the 2020s. This storage is seen as a permanent solution.

Den Gammer, ETI’s CCS Strategy Manager, said offshore storage “will put the UK on track to permanently store decades of emissions from many of its major power stations and industrial emitters,” and will “significantly de-risk and encourage the deployment of CCS technology in the years ahead.”
