CNNC open to closer ties with Areva

A top official at China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) says the company is open to all forms of an alliance with French nuclear firm, Areva.

The loss-making nuclear group Areva is currently restructuring and is already partnered with CNNC in developing the Hinkley Point nuclear power project.
"Especially as Areva is now in a difficult time, we shall cooperate more, which can either cover the whole industrial chain, or over uranium mining, fuel supplies or reactor building," CNNC general manager Qian Zhimin told a media briefing.

French media reported this week that Areva has attracted the interest of three Chinese groups, including CNNC, in its technology and parts of its business. Areva recorded a 4.8 billion euro loss for 2014.

In an estimated $100bn programme aimed at reducing coal power capacity, Beijing aims to raise its domestic nuclear power capacity to 58 GW by 2020 from 20.3 GW at the end of 2014, although this would only meet 3 per cent of China's total 2020 electricity needs.
