Alstom to use local lignite for ultra-efficient Thai coal plant

Alstom has been appointed by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) to build it the first ultra-supercritical lignite-fired power plant in Asia.

The contract will see Alstom supply and build a 600 MW coal-fired power plant at the Mae Moh facility in Lampang province, northern Thailand to replace four existing 150 MW generators (units 4-7) installed there between 1984 and 1985.

For its $ 565.578m portion of the $ 1.033bn engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract signed in consortium with Japanese Marubeni Corporation, Alstom will supply an ultra-supercritical boiler with integrated Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx (SCR), ultra–supercritical steam turbine and generator, an air quality control system comprising a Wet Flue Gas Desulphurisation (WFGD) which reduces sulphur oxides   by 98 per cent, and an Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) designed to capture particulate and dust emissions with an efficiency of 99.9 per cent.

Andreas Lusch, senior vice president Steam Business at Alstom said “the 2,400 MW Mae Moh power plant is essential to Thailand’s generation capacity, and produces about 15 per cent of Egat’s total output from local lignite.

“This new project will allow Egat to replace units 4 to 7 with a new, state of the art lignite fired unit, maintaining a sustainable use of the local lignite sources, while reducing significantly the environmental footprint of the plant.”
