Coal firm claims world’s largest methane power plant

A Chinese coal mining firm claims to have built the world's largest facility to generate power from methane gas emitted during mining operations.

About 99 per cent of the methane gas emitted as a by-product from coal mining can be used by the facility, which would have a maximum capacity of 30 MW, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Lu’an Group’s Methane Gas Research Institute says that the facility in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.4 million tonnes per year.
