US development agency funds gas-fired project in Afghanistan

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is to provide $125m to assist development of the Sheberghan Gas Development Project (SGDP) in Afghanistan.

The project includes the construction and operation of a gas processing plant and 200 USAIDMW gas-fired power generation plant near Mazar-i-Sharif in the north of the country.

USAID, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Asian Development Bank also organized a symposium to stimulate international private sector interest in the development of natural gas infrastructure in northern Afghanistan, particularly in gas processing and power generation.


It’s part of the US aim at developing the country’s overall energy infrastructure.
