Areva clinches control systems deal for China nuclear reactors

French nuclear technology company Areva has won a deal to provide instrumentation and control systems for two new reactors in China.

Areva will supply the systems to reactors 5 and 6 at the Yangjiang and Hongyanhe reactors, which are being built by utility China Nuclear Power Engineering. Yangjiang nuclear reactor

Yangjiang is the largest nuclear construction site in the world. Work started on Unit 1 in 2008, with units 2, 3 and 4 following in 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively. Work began on unit 5 in 2013 and on unit 6 this year. All six reactors are due to be operational in 2018. Hongyanhe already has units 1 and 2 operational and work is underway on another four.

Areva’s incore instrumentation system measures the neutron fluxes and the temperature in the core of the reactor and this information is used to adjust the reactor control and protection parameters. The plants at both Yangjiang and Hongyanhe will utilise ACPR-1000 reactors, a pressurized water reactor designed by China General Nuclear Power Group.

Rémy Autebert, Areva’s director for Asia, said the deal “consolidates our position in this market and strengthens the historic ties between Areva and its Chinese customers”.
