Westinghouse and Sofia University prepare for Bulgarian nuclear construction

Westinghouse Electric is in partnership with the Technical University of Sofia (TU-Sofia) to ensure a new generation of Bulgarian engineers possess the expertise to engage with new nuclear technology.

The parties have signed a bilateral cooperation agreement in preparation of the construction of the new reactor at Kozloduy nuclear power plant (NPP) in Bulgaria.
The agreement covers cooperation with several of the university's faculties in disciplines that are of particular relevance to the construction of an AP1000 pressurized water reactor (PWR) and advanced nuclear automation.

As part of the agreement, TU-Sofia will host a number of lectures and seminars on AP1000 reactor technology for students and other interested academic and technical stakeholders, to ensure the students are academically well prepared to directly participate in the AP1000 reactor construction, and support its operation in future.

Westinghouse Key Accounts EMEA vice president Aziz Dag said, "Bulgaria has a long tradition of nuclear power and know-how, and this new agreement brings Westinghouse together with one of the country's eminent technical institutions."

The agreement will help support the future needs of the recently established Westinghouse European Nuclear Information and Control Systems Center of Excellence in Sofia.
