Solar to power Welcome to Las Vegas sign

It’s one of the most iconic signs in the US – and it’s about to go green. Solar powered Vegas

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is to be powered by a solar tree, which will allow it to be powered solely on harnessed solar energy.

Clark County Commissioner Mary Beth Scow said: “Sustainability is key to Southern Nevada’s future and lighting this iconic sign with renewable, solar energy will stand as an example of what we can do in this community when we put our collective mind to it.”

The bid to convert the power source for the legendary sign was led by sustainability nonprofit organization Green Chips and Clean Energy Project, a Las Vegas group that promotes the benefits of a clean energy economy.

Green Chips board member Chris Giunchigliani said: “The Las Vegas Valley is one of the sunniest spots on the planet and we are delighted to harness that sunshine and use it to power such an iconic symbol of our community.
