Controversial Korean nuclear reactor re-start approved

A South Korean nuclear power plant, which had been embroiled in scandal following a fake safety certificate scandal, has been approved to re-open.

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) has secured approval from the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission to restart one of six closed reactors.

The Hanbit No.2 reactor, in Yeonggwang county, was shut since 30 October 2013.

The commission also approved replacement cables for three more reactors, Shin Kori No.1 and Shin Kori No.2 in the city of Busan and Shin Wolsong No.1 in Gyeongju, all three of which were shut in May of this year after the scandal was exposed.

LS Cable & System will provide the cables for these reactors, in advance of an expected restart scheduled for the end of December 2013, while KHNP will install the cables in place of those from JS Cable.

The commission reported that tests conducted on new control cables are satisfactory and these could be installed in place of cables supplied with fake certificates. "The commission will thoroughly test their operations once the control cables are installed," it said.
