Siemens delivers Brazilian turbine milestone

This month Siemens (NYSE: SI) celebrated the delivery of the 1000th steam turbine produced at its Jindiai, Brazil-based facility near Sao Paolo.

Jundiai is home to one of seven Siemens industrial steam turbine production facilities worldwide. The model SST-300 turbine was ordered by Guarani, one of the leading Brazilian companies in the sugar and ethanol industries. "The delivery of the 1000th turbine marks a historical moment for all of us, proving that we can provide solutions that meet the needs of the market", stated Thiago Pistore, head of steam turbine production at Siemens Brazil.

Siemens claims to possess one of the most advanced and efficient systems for vibration testing of rotors at the site, and it has been possible to balance turbine and compressor rotors on-site starting three years ago, reducing the test periods required for this from 90 to 30 days.

Besides the production of turbines, Siemens also employs innovative technology to serve Brazil's growing markets. The use of ethanol as fuel and power generation using bagasse (residues from sugar production from sugar cane) are but two examples of the growing significance of the sugar and ethanol industries in Brazil. Siemens supplied the first turbine produced in Jundiaí for this industry in 2006 – an SST-300.

This turbine enhances the overall efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle and increases electricity output with the same amount of fuel.

The SST-600 model used at this facility is the largest steam turbine ever produced in Brazil, with a rated output of more than 100 MW.
