A$1bn wind farm up and running in Australia

The 420 MW Macarthur wind farm has commenced operations in Victoria, Australia.

Energy companies AGL Energy and Meridian Energy are behind the joint venture, which was constructed by Vestas-Leighton Contractors and comprises 140 Vestas V112-3.0 turbine generators.

"With a project value of about $1 billion, it is the largest wind farm in the entire Southern Hemisphere," noted Federal Minister for Resources and Energy Gary Gray.

Meanwhile, the Macarthur project is expected to meet the power requirements of 220,000 average Victorian homes, besides reducing 1.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gases every year.
