Legislation leads to sale of Italian wind farms

Italy’s state energy management agency GSE is pushing through new legislation that has already had an impact on the Italian wind power market.

Windpower Monthly report that wind farms totalling some 1.2 GW have been put up for sale as a new market framework has led a number of companies to reconsider plans for the Italian wind energy market.

The new system sets a limit on the number of onshore projects that will receive the FIT at well below the 1GW annual growth rate the Italian market has seen in recent years.

The biggest portfolio being marketed is 550 MW in Italian wind farms owned by the International Power division of Gaz de France.

Edison, a frontrunner in Italy’s wind sector now owned by French utility EDF, is also marketing its 468 MW in Italian wind farms.

Another departure comes from Swiss energy group Alpiq. They have put up for sale 200 MW in Italy.
While Italian firm Falck Renewables is not looking to make divestments, a source says it is looking for a partner.  Falck has a total 655 MW in wind farms in Italy, France, Spain and the UK.

"Without a doubt there should be a strong reduction in new wind capacity," said Costantino Lato, GSE's research and statistics director.
