Work suspended again at Teles Pires hydro project

A Brazilian court has ordered the immediate suspension of work at the site of the 1820 MW Teles Pires project in Para state, the state news agency Agencia Brasil reported.

A federal judge had previously suspended the hydro project in March at the request of the Federal Public Ministries of Para and Mato Grosso, the report added.

However, construction resumed the following month after a court overruled the injunction.

Last year Ibama, Brazil’s environmental agency, awarded a licence for the Teles Pires project but the Federal Public Ministries expressed concern about the potential impact of the project on local indigenous communities.

The latest suspension to the project is likely to be appealed.
