The Maldives’ largest solar PV facility now operational

The largest solar power installation in the Maldives has been commissioned, says Wirsol Solar AG, the German developer of the project, marking a milestone in the island state’s renewable energy goal.

The 294 kW photovoltaic (PV) plant is now supplying electricity to hospitals and schools on all six islands, the developer confirmed.

"As solar radiation here is about 70 per cent higher than in Germany, photovoltaics is the central component of the energy turnaround on the Maldives," explains Stefan Riel, co-founder of Wirsol Solar.

Wirsol Solar, which also operates the PV plant, has formed a joint venture with Renewable Energy Maldives (REM), with the power produced sold onto the state energy supplier STELCO.

Currently in the Maldives almost all of its electricity is generated by diesel generators.

However, this type of power production is extremely expensive. The current cost for 1 kWh of diesel is estimated to be around $0.29.

Currently, the Maldives spend around 17 per cent of its GDP on the import of diesel, but the price of fuel is constantly rising.

In response, the island state has set an extremely ambitious goal to have all of its power requirements met by renewable energy sources by 2020.
