Scotland launches first marine energy park

A first for Scotland as the country’s first marine energy park has been launched.

The Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Marine Energy Park was inaugurated by UK Energy Minister Greg Barker as part of the drive towards marine power development.

It follows the UK’s first such marine park in the south west of England and will include the European Marine Energy Centre (Emec) on Orkney. The park aims to link university researchers and private firm working in marine energy.

Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing told the BBC that "Progress in Scottish wave and tidal renewables has been staggering, but the Scottish government recognises that more financial support is needed to help the sector achieve its fullest potential.”
