NRG Energy acquires GenOn Energy in $1.7bn deal

The largest unregulated generator of electricity in the US is to be unveiled after NRG Energy announced the acquisition of GenOn Energy, in a deal worth $1.7bn.

As a result of the acquisition, NRG will have 47000 MW of capacity, generating 5 per cent of America’s electricity.

FT reports that NRG operates nuclear, wind, solar and traditional power plants that serve about 2m customers, mainly in Texas, while GenOn, serves customers in the northeast US and California, and operates more conventional coal and natural gas power plants.
