Areva step up interest in UK nuclear builds

Areva (Euronext: CEI) are to bid for the Horizon nuclear venture in the UK, with Chief Executive Luc Oursel proposing nuclear reactors for Anglesey and Gloustershire.

The French energy company are in talks to go into partnership with a Chinese company, after the withdrawal of previous backers left the projects in doubt.

In what will be welcome news for the UK government, beleaguered by a failure to keep Horizon afloat, Mr Oursel said “We will probably do it with Chinese power companies and other players.”

According to the Financial Times, Areva confirmed on Sunday that this would include state-owned China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation.
