Brazil considers auction to promote solar power

The government of Brazil may be “considering" holding a solar energy auction in an effort to encourage the development of a domestic solar power industry, according to an official.

The government has been studying the possibility of holding an auction, but no decisions have been made yet, confirmed Fabio Rua, the government relations manager of GE Energy for Latin America.

A special auction for this source of energy could help reduce the cost per MWh of solar energy, he added.

Others have made the point that an auction alone is unlikely to be enough for the sector to gain traction in Brazil.
