MP warns UK government to get a grip on smart rollout

In a UK parliamentary debate on smart meters, John Healey MP called on the government to 'get a grip on the smart meter roll-out', warning of a lack of control over costs and consumer problems.

Mr Healey highlighted that there were emerging problems with the roll-out of smart gas and electricity meters that 'could irrevocably damage' the programme if they aren't addressed.

The cost of rolling-out smart meters will be added to customer bills, so the MP was keen to stress that the government should keep a tight control on the costs of the programme, reports Which magazine.

He added: 'If the government gets this wrong, it could end up starting badly, failing to finish, and costing the consumer dearly.
