Siemens and Boeing develop microgrid at US military base

Energy efficient technologies are being installed at a U.S. military installation that will realize as much as 40 per cent savings in energy costs.

Outcome Mag online reports that the project — under the U.S. Department of Defense Environmental Security Technology Certification Program — is being undertaken by a partnership between Siemens (FWB: SIE, NYSE) and Boeing (NYSE: BA NASDAQ: BA).

“This project is a great example of the innovative ways in which Siemens and Boeing are working together to provide the best energy-management solutions to our government customers,” said Judy Marks, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Government Technologies Inc.

“Addressing the (Defense Department’s) security protocols in this demonstration project will provide a model for implementing intelligent energy-management technology at other (department) sites.”

The companies said their team on the project includes the University of California at Berkeley and KEMA Services Inc.

Solutions to be implemented for energy savings include integrated controls for cooling and heating systems, lighting, ventilation and plug loads. Energy management, using the Siemens Apogee Building Automation System, will operate with the existing building automation systems. Boeing’s services-oriented architecture will provide protected operation for central micro-grid energy management.

The location of the facility to be improved wasn’t disclosed.
