'Feeling of pride' as UK surpasses 6000 MW wind power

The U.K. has passed the 6000 MW mark for wind power for the first time, enough to power 3.3 million homes.

The figures were released by wind and marine industry group, RenewableUK, following information that the Ormonde offshore wind farm, located off the coast of Cumbria, now has 120 MW operational, which is enough to power more than 67000 homes.

The group said that the landmark is just the start and said that there is 19500 MW of wind energy projects under construction, consented, or in the planning stages.

"The Government's Renewable Energy Roadmap is calling for 31000 MW of onshore and offshore wind combined by 2020, and we're confident that we can deliver this if we continue to get the right level of Government support," explained RenewableUK's Chief Executive, Maria McCaffery.

"This is a landmark achievement. There's a great feeling of pride throughout the industry that we've reached a record high of 6,000 MW."

The good news for the sector comes in the same week as a damning report from political think tank, Policy Exchange, which argued that the government should drop its renewable energy goals and its support for expensive offshore wind projects to avoid significantly increasing consumer electricity costs in the coming decade.

However, the U.K.'s Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Chris Huhne, branded the report as "nonsense on stilts".

"There is no such increase in the cost to families," he countered, "but what there are is a load of rather silly think tanks trying to differentiate themselves in a crowded market by coming up with wild and woolly estimates to get headlines."
