Siemens will participate in the upcoming POWER-GEN International 2016 Conference & Exhibition in Orlando (December 13 – 15), showcasing a comprehensive portfolio for fossil-based power generation, oil and gas, intelligent power networks, power generation services, energy storage and energy efficiency.
Siemens – with offerings that include heavy duty, industrial and aero-derivative gas turbines; steam turbines; generators; heat recovery steam generators; compressors; energy management solutions; and digital services – will have a booth in the exhibit hall (#5100) featuring an interactive virtual reality experience that allows visitors to learn more about the company’s latest technology and service offerings, including a realistic simulation of Siemens’ SGT-800 gas turbine. Siemens’ SGT-750 industrial gas turbine, with a newly upgraded 41 MW rating, will be featured in the company’s booth. With efficiency levels of close to 42 percent and the lowest emissions in the market, this flexible industrial gas turbine delivers added value to customers. The Siemens booth will also showcase custom energy and power generation solutions for oil and gas, industrial, institutional, and general industries from the Dresser-Rand business, a global supplier of rotating equipment.

Maxwell Technologies Announces Generator Starting Solutions for Commercial and Industrial Standby and Backup Generator Market
New Ultracapacitor-Based Modules Deliver Strong, Reliable Starting Power for Gensets
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – December 12, 2016 – Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXWL), a leading developer and manufacturer of ultracapacitor-based energy storage and power delivery solutions, today announced the Generator Starting Solutions (GSS) product line. As the newest addition to the company’s ultracapacitor-based product offerings, the GSS modules help start commercial and industrial standby and backup generators (gensets). Maxwell is the first company to offer dedicated ultracapacitor-based products that provide strong successful genset starts within seconds of loss of power.
Grid power failures are a major concern for power-critical facilities such as hospitals, hotels, data centers and server farms. Maxwell’s GSS modules support a variety of gensets, from towables to stationary power systems, and bring a high level of confidence to building operators that gensets will start when needed. While failure-to-start is often battery-related, Maxwell’s GSS modules can be installed alongside batteries to provide burst power during cranking. Alternatively, GSS modules can replace batteries entirely, thereby eliminating the most common reason for genset failure-to-start.
Richard Knittel, vice president of technical services of Prime Power Services, a company that provides emergency power supply services and relies on the GSS module, said, “We maintain over 3,000 generators and spend a lot of time and effort maintaining conventional batteries. They are the weakest link in the system. Using Maxwell ultracapacitors on our sites has been a game changer, requiring extremely low maintenance and providing dramatic improvement in cranking performance regardless of ambient temperatures.”
The GSS product line consists of BCI group 31 form factor modules that are installed with or in place of batteries for starting standby and backup generators in commercial and industrial buildings. With high power, fast response and long operating lifetimes, ultracapacitors are more durable, more reliable and more efficient than batteries. They provide high-burst starting power to gensets ranging from 50 kilowatts (kW) to 3.5 megawatts (MW). For National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 110 Type 10 requirements, GSS modules greatly assist in restoring power within 10 seconds of failure. The GSS module reduces starting time and comes with a 10-year warranty with the use of a Maxwell-approved charger.*

TAW Installed A VTL So Large It Required Its Own Building
TAMPA, FL. DECEMBER 2016—TAW is pleased to announce the completion of our new 4900 sq. ft. precision machine shop annex located at the TAW Tampa Service Center. We have something even bigger to offer inside: A 144-inch vertical turret lathe (VTL) with a 168-inch swing and a 220,000 lb. load capacity. It is one of the largest VTLs in the southeast.
The new machine shop also provides space for a 100-inch Shibaura-Berthiez VTL, a 46-inch Bullard Cut Master VTL, and a 5-inch Lucas CNC Horizontal Mill with four axis machining capability. Our precision lathes are spinning with possibilities. The 144-inch VTL provides TAW’s expert technicians with the ability to machine much larger parts—up to 220,000 pounds. TAW Custom Equipment engineers designed and manufactured new controls for the lathe, providing better speed control, more accurate cuts and the most advanced technology available. The 100-inch VTL has a 103-inch max swing with 72-inches under the rail and a 30,000-pound table weight capacity. The 46-inch VTL is a unique mill that can machine 84-inches under the rail, providing a 30,000-pound table weight capacity and a 56-inch max swing.
TAW’s Tampa Service Center previously housed all departments under one big—100,000 sq. ft.— roof, but the new machine shop annex was specifically designed for the stability of large rotating machinery, and adds to TAW’s advanced capabilities in repairing and manufacturing power generation equipment, pumps and motors.
Each of the large VTLs has its own concrete isolation pad to reduce vibrations and increase tolerance accuracy. The new machine shop was also designed around an overhead crane system capable of supporting a 50-ton lifting capacity. A critical design feature includes the crane alignment between our existing service center and the new machine shop, which permits the two cranes to be connected in the future allowing parts to be transferred between the two facilities using only the cranes.
If you’ve worked with TAW before, you won’t be surprised to learn that a copious amount of engineering went into designing the foundation of our new machine shop. We made sure the structure was engineered specifically for housing heavy duty high tolerance equipment. The foundation required nine separate concrete pours and more than 30 pilings driven under the crane supports. Isolation pads were installed for each slab, to totally isolate each machine from any outside influence that might cause a disruption or distortion during the machining process. We have about 18,000 pounds of rebar in the slab and the concrete is rated to 5000 pound per square inch instead of the standard 3000 found in most buildings.
Having these critical milling operations consolidated in one highly engineered building, also translates to improved customer service, streamlining the production process and reducing turn-around time.
