Emerson Making Virtual Power Plant a Reality with Industry’s First Integrated Control and Simulation Platform
Emerson’s Ovation™ simulation platform gives operators real-time, virtual way to evaluate different operating strategies before implementing them, reducing operational risks and improving power plant reliability
PITTSBURGH (December 13, 2016) – With the introduction of the industry’s first integrated control and simulation platform, Emerson (NYSE: EMR) has positioned owners of coal, combined cycle and other power generation facilities around the globe to fundamentally change how they operate their power plants. Sales of Ovation™ high-fidelity embedded simulation have more than doubled in the past year, signaling significant demand for the virtual power plant of the future and its value in minimizing risk and improving power plant reliability.

According to a 2016 U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) report, global electricity demand will see a 69 percent increase by 2040, putting further pressure on reliable generation. While the trend toward renewables offers energy resource diversity, cycling traditional power plants due to the variability of renewable sources on the grid has proven to increase stress on production equipment, increasing maintenance costs and adding risk of unplanned outages.

In the virtual power plant of the future, the high-fidelity Ovation power plant simulator will run in parallel with the Ovation control system. Operators can test control logic changes in advance based on real-time plant data to ensure their changes won’t disrupt operations or cause a forced outage. Other Emerson technologies such as pattern recognition, Pervasive Sensing™ and analytical tools will enhance the experience to allow plant operators to virtually experience what may happen in their operation before it does.
Emerson is also the only company that offers a single automation platform for both control and simulation, reducing complexity while allowing power generators to run their plants smarter and more efficiently.

Global Strategic Alliance Improves Plant Efficiency, Reliability and Emissions
Orlando, FL- (December 13, 2016) Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), the recognized leader in power plant reliability and efficiency through the use of big data, expert knowledge and human insights, is expanding its global relationship with OSIsoft, a leader in Operational Intelligence, to drive further development of the digital power plant of the future.
MHPS laid the foundation for the Digital Power Plant in the 1980s and made a major step in 2004 when it began using the OSIsoft PI System at its Remote Monitoring and Diagnostics Center in Orlando, Fla. This service has successfully demonstrated and delivered improved plant reliability and performance.
The OSIsoft PI System captures sensor-based data from industrial equipment and process systems. Deployed across 19,000 industrial sites in more than 125 counties the PI System enables digital transformations and improves process efficiency, energy use, asset reliability, quality and safety.
The PI System will serve as the core for new interactive, cloud-based analytics services MHPS will use at power plants world-wide. Siemens to supply additional aero-derivative gas turbines to help power New York City
Siemens is filling an order from Macquarie Infrastructure Corporation (MIC) for the installation of additional advanced aero-derivative gas turbines at the Bayonne Energy Center (BEC), which delivers power through a dedicated 6.5 mile long underwater transmission cable to the Consolidated Edison Gowanus substation in Brooklyn to meet the electricity needs of over 500,000 homes and businesses in New York City. With aero-derivative technology, the flexible BEC plant can produce full power from a standing start in less than ten minutes of receiving a request from the power distributor, helping to ensure grid stability in New York City.
The delivery of two Industrial Trent 60 Wet Low Emission (WLE) gas turbines and two generators expands Siemens’ existing support for the BEC plant. BEC previously purchased eight Industrial Trent 60 gas turbines in 2009. Additionally, Siemens has also contributed a significant amount of capital to fund the project’s construction since 2010 and is the largest lender in the current loan.
As part of this order, Siemens has been awarded an extension to its current long-term service contract for the eight existing Industrial Trent 60 gas turbines, generators and auxiliary packages. A long-term agreement is also in place for the two new units following installation and commissioning.

With the addition of these new units – two Industrial Trent 60 gas turbines and two SGen-100A generators – the facility’s power output will be increased to 640 MW. Features of the BEC include the ability for multiple starts and stops per day, high availability and starting reliability, best in class efficiency levels and best achievable emissions performance.
The existing service and maintenance partnership between BEC and Siemens includes joint workshops and the development of a cross-organizational team to deliver high reliability. The entire Siemens platform team has worked closely with BEC to continuously improve overall plant performance. This collaboration has resulted in highly successful performance. For example, during the summer peak operating period in 2015, which saw BEC start the units over 1,000 times (operating over 5,500 hours) the facility achieved a world-class reliability rate of >99.76%.
Capital support from Siemens Financial Services division (SFS) has played a key role since the project’s initial construction phase in 2010. Overall, SFS has participated in 3 separate loans in support of the project over the years. Initially, as sole lender, SFS provided a $50 million holding company loan to the prior owner, which was important to funding the project’s construction. In June 2014, SFS contributed $58 million towards a new project loan – making Siemens the largest single lender in that financing structure. In June 2015, SFS funded $60 million of the new $275 million project loan – again, making SFS the largest lender in the current loan.
