Companies Picked to Decommission San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

By Editors of Power Engineering

AECOM and EnergySolutions have been selected as the joint decommissioning general contractor for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating station.

Southern California Edison, operator of San Onofre, selected the two companies to work together as SONGS Decommissioning Solutions on the $4.4 billion project.

The process, one of the largest commercial nuclear plant decommissioning to date, will create 600 jobs over the 10-year dismantlement and decontamination process.

San Onofre, which included two reactors between Los Angeles and San Diego, was shut down in 2012 after a small radiation leak led to the discovery of extensive damage to hundreds of tubes inside the virtually new generators.

Southern California Edison decided to close the plant for good in 2013 after concerns over whether the plant was too damaged to restart safely.
