CPV Maryland LLC on Dec. 2 filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission a proposed rate schedule which sets forth CPV Maryland’s charges and revenue requirements for providing cost-based Reactive Supply and Voltage Control from Generation or Other Sources Service under a PJM Interconnection tariff.
CPV Maryland has constructed, owns and will operate a 725-MW combined-cycle gas-fired facility and limited interconnection facilities located in Waldorf, Maryland. The facility is interconnected with transmission facilities owned by Potomac Electric Power Co. and operated by PJM. CPV Maryland is authorized to sell power at market-based rates and is an exempt wholesale generator.
The company said this facility, called the CPV St. Charles Energy Center, is expected to commence commercial operations on or before Feb. 1, 2017.
Reactive power provides a stable voltage profile and is required to establish electric fields in facilities, such as transmission lines and electric motors, for the transfer of power, and for operation of a device such as a motor. The availability of reactive power allows PJM to maintain transmission voltages on its system within acceptable limits.

Knodel, the Projects Director for Transmission and Distribution America for Mott MacDonald USA LLC: "The Facility is a 725 MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle electric generating facility located in Waldorf, Maryland. The Facility consists of one steam turbine generator (STG #1) with a nameplate rating of 328.1 MW and two combustion turbine generators (CTG #1 and CTG #2) each with a nameplate rating of 223.55 MW. The steam turbine generator is a General Electric ('GE') model 324-D6XSX steam turbine generator. The two combustion turbine generators are GE 7FH2B combustion turbine generators."
