TVA Sets Auction Date for Unfinished Nuclear Plant

The Tennessee Valley Authority has set a November 14 auction date for its unfinished Bellefonte nuclear plant.

TVA set a minimum bid of $36.4 million for the 1,400 acres, cooling towers, partially-constructed pressurized water reactors, transmission infrastructure, water intake systems and various buildings. Though the minimum bid is the property’s appraised value, TVA spent over $4 billion on the site. Phoenix Energy of Nevada offered $38 million in May, but TVA rejected the offer.

Next month’s auction will be conducted by Concentric Energy Advisors Inc.

TVA began work on Bellefonte in 1973, though work was suspended a decade later when demand for power slowed.
