Nuclear Decommissioning Services to Reach $8.55 Billion by 2021

A new report by Research and Markets indicates the global nuclear decommissioning services market is projected to reach $8.55 billion by 2021 with a compound annual growth rate of 12.1 percent over the next five years.

The report, Nuclear Decommissioning Services Market – Global Forecast to 2021, attributed the growth to nuclear accidents and rising political pressure for pre-closure of nuclear plants.

Europe will have the largest share of nuclear phaseouts, followed by North America and Asia-Pacific. However, Research and Markets estimated Asia-Pacific will see the fastest growth, due to a larger number of nuclear plants in Japan and South Korea.

Immediate dismantling will have the largest market size over the forecast period compared to deferred dismantling and entombment, due to early phaseouts of nuclear power plants in Germany and Italy.

On average, decommissioning costs range from $600 million to $750 million per plant. The report, Nuclear Decommissioning Services Market – Global Forecast to 2021, attributed the growth to nuclear accidents and rising political pressure for pre-closure of nuclear plants.
