Indiana Michigan Power Asks Regulators for Additional Emission Controls

By Editors of Power Engineering

Indiana Michigan Power, an operating unit of American Electric Power, filed plans to add selective catalytic reduction emission controls on Unit 2 of its coal-fired Rockport generation plant.

I&M filed the plans with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. Previously, the IURC approved I&M’s plans for SCR emission controls at Rockport's Unit 1.

“I&M constantly works to reduce our environmental impact while generating and delivering reliable, affordable power to our customers,” said Paul Chodak III, I&M president and COO. “In the past year, we have built three solar power plants, and a fourth will come online before the end of 2016. We are proud to say about 60 percent of our generation is already emission-free, and our long-term plans include adding more renewable generation.

Plans call for I&M to install SCR at Rockport by the end of 2019.

Other emission controls already in place at Rockport include low NOx burners, dry sorbent injection technology to reduce sulfur dioxide, activated carbon injection technology for mercury and low-sulfur coal.

I&M’s plans to curb emissions also involve new solar generation plants and 450 MW of wind power. The company hopes to power 400,000 homes via wind and solar generation by 2035.
