AEP Chooses Greensmith Energy's Energy Storage Software

American Electric Power (AEP, NYSE: AEP) picked Greensmith Energy as the software provider for a 2-MW/14-MWh energy storage system in West Virginia.

The five-year-old GEMS battery system has been used as backup for AEP’s distribution network in the region. With the new software, AEP plans to expand the use of the system into a revenue generating asset by performing frequency regulation in the PJM market.

“Greensmith’s software and services will allow us to enhance the benefits of this energy storage system for our Appalachian Power customers,” said Ram Sastry, AEP’s Vice President, Infrastructure and Business Continuity. “This battery system was installed to help extend the life of the distribution equipment in this area.”

The site will be participating in the PJM energy storage market by October 2016.
