Westar Energy Offers $350 Million in Green Bonds

Westar Energy has announced it will offer “green bonds” to support the construction of new renewable energy projects.

Green bonds are an emerging investment asset class that tie the proceeds of a bond to environmental projects. Westar’s green bonds will primarily be used in the construction of Western Plains Wind Farm in Kansas.

Westar and Infinity Wind Power will construct the 280-MW wind farm in Ford County, bringing Westar’s renewable energy commitment to 1,700 MW.

The wind farm will be operational by early 2017.
