UK Biogas Plant to Generate Power from Surrey Food Scraps


Global engineering and construction company M+W group has selected GE’s Jenbacher gas engines and a Monsal advanced anaerobic digestion system for installation at the Surrey County Council’s new Eco Park waste treatment and biogas-to-energy facility. The new installation is being built by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery in Shepperton, Surrey, England.

Supported by a grant from the U.K. government, the facility will be co-located with an existing community recycling center about five miles from Heathrow Airport, where it will generate power from 40,000 tons of food waste collected annually throughout Surrey. These food scraps will be converted into biogas to fuel two low-NOx Jenbacher J416 gas engines, generating both renewable electricity and heat. The gas engines will be provided by Clarke Energy, GE’s authorized distributor, and will generate 2.4 MW for distribution to the national grid.

Configured as a combined heat and power plant, Eco Park will supply baseload power to the local distribution network while simultaneously providing an alternative to landfill disposal via anaerobic digestion. The plant will also include a 55,000-tons-per-year gasification facility with pre-treatment and a recyclables bulking facility. The gasification system will be installed separately and will process municipal waste into a partially renewable combustible gas known as syngas for additional power generation.
