NRC Approves Catawba nuclear Unit 1 power uprate request Duke Energy

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved a request by Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) to increase the generating capacity of Catawba Nuclear Unit 1 in South Carolina.

The uprate is designed to increase Unit 1’s generating capacity from approximately 1,167 MW to 1,187 MW. Duke Energy intends to implement the uprate this month.

The NRC staff found that Duke Energy could safely increase the reactor’s output primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow. The staff determination was based on its review that Duke’s evaluations show the plant’s design can handle the increased power level.

The NRC’s safety evaluation of the proposed power uprate focused on several areas, including the nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and controls, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, fire protection, operations and training, testing, and technical specification changes. NRC staff also conducted independent calculations and evaluations of selected areas.
