Horizon Nuclear Power picks new JV to build Wylfa Newydd Plant in Wales

Horizon Nuclear Power appointed newly formed joint venture Menter Newydd to build a nuclear reactor at the Wylfa Newydd project in Wales.

Menter Newydd, meaning New Venture in Welsh, is a joint venture of Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe Ltd., US-based Bechtel Management Co. and UK-based JGC Corp. The joint venture will develop construction plans for the Wylfa Newydd site and continue to build supply chain relationships. Hitachi-GE will continue to provide the UK ABWR technology under sub-contract to Menter Newydd. The reactor is expected to complete its UK Generic Design Assessment by the end of 2017. Construction on the two ABWRs is set to begin in 2019.

“All the partners are proven at the highest level, and I’m delighted we’ve established the balance of expertise to safely deliver for Horizon, on-cost and on-schedule,” said Hitachi’s Malcolm Twist, project director for Menter Newydd. “We expect to begin firming up relationships with our main sub-contractors – many of them British – very soon.”
