DONG Energy (DONG) announced yesterday it has taken over more than 1000 MW of wind project development rights previously held by RES Americas Development Inc. (RES).

The lease area off the coast of New Jersey was acquired by RES during the offshore wind auction held by BOEM in November of last year. DONG assumed legal possession of the rights on May 11. RES will continue to support the development of the lease area as detailed in the agreement.

The 160,480-acre lease area named Ocean Wind lies about 10 nautical miles offshore and can accommodate more than 1000 MW of wind resources. It is the second lease area held by DONG, which also holds an area along the coast of Massachusetts.

“DONG Energy’s entry into New Jersey is a great opportunity,” said Thomas Brostrøm, General Manager of North America, Wind Power. “As the world leader of offshore wind development, we look forward to expanding our profile in the U.S. and potentially building an industry.”

The announcement was made during the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management New Jersey Renewable Energy Task Force meeting in Trenton.
