Pilgrim Nuclear Plant Set to Shut Down in May 2019 Entergy

Entergy Corp. (NYSE: ETR) said it will refuel the single-unit, 680-MW Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Massachusetts one last time before shutting it down in 2019.

When Entergy first announced it would shut down the Pilgrim plant, it gave a closure timeframe between 2017 and 2019. The latest announcement of the spring 2017 refueling means the plant will officially shut down on May 31, 2019 to continue supplying power to New England. The decision also means Pilgrim will conduct a refueling outage, which brings economic benefits to the region and the company. The 2015 refueling outage resulted in a $70 million investment in the plant, including $25 million in new equipment. Nearly 2,000 employees, including an additional 1,184 contract workers, perform hundreds of activities.

Planning for decommissioning will begin with the formation of a dedicated team of individuals that will develop a Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report. The plan is due no later than two years after shutdown, and spells out planned decommissioning activities, a schedule, cost estimate, and environmental impacts. Entergy will also create a Nuclear Decommissioning Citizen’s Advisory/Engagement Panel.
