MHPSA Receives Orders for Two M501J Gas Turbines

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas (MHPSA) has received orders for two M501J gas turbines, the 42nd and 43rd such orders to be received so far by MHPSA for J-series turbines.

Nebraska-based Tenaska placed the orders for the 327-MW turbines and associated generators, to be installed at the Westmoreland Generating Station in South Huntingdon Township, Pennsylvania. The 2-on-1, 925-MW power plant project also contracted with MHPSA for a long-term service agreement.

Tenaska affiliate Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners, LLC will build, own, and operate the facility, which will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of about 925,000 homes. The new plant will be the most efficient in Tenaska’s portfolio, helping to set a new cost of electricity standard for the PJM region.

In commercial operation since 2011, J-series turbines approach 62-percent efficiency in combined-cycle operation, and maintain greater than 99-percent reliability.

Including this latest contract, MHPSA has received 43 orders for J-series gas turbines worldwide. Nineteen of these units are in commercial operation with collective actual operating hours exceeding 220,000 hours. Ten of the turbines on order will be installed in North America. MHPSA recently delivered its first U.S.-manufactured M501J gas turbine to Grand River Dam Authority’s (GRDA) Energy Center in Chouteau, Oklahoma.
