NET Power Breaks Ground on Zero Emissions Gas-Fired Demo Plant

NET Power LLC broke ground on a $140 million, 50-MW demonstration plant that will validate a zero emissions natural gas power system in Texas. NET Power is a collaboration between Exelon (NYSE: EXC), CB&I (NYSE: CBI), and 8 Rivers Capital.
The plant will demonstrate NET Power’s Allam Cycle technology, which uses an oxy-fuel, supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) power cycle to produce electricity by using CO2 as a working fluid to drive a combustion turbine. It is designed to eliminate all emissions without installing pollutant-control technology, and produce pipeline-quality CO2 that can be sequestered or used in various industrial processes, including enhanced oil recovery. The technology can also operate without water.
The project includes the demo plant design and construction, ongoing technology advancement, a full testing and operations program and commercial product development. It will be funded by a combination of cash and in-kind contributions from Exelon and CB&I. Toshiba developed and is now manufacturing a new supercritical CO2 turbine and combustor for the project. CB&I is performing the engineering, procurement, and construction of the plant. Exelon is providing operations, maintenance and development services. 8 Rivers invented and continues to advance the technology behind the project.
Commissioning of the demo plant will begin in late 2016 and be completed in 2017. The plant will also provide validation to begin building the first 295-MW commercial-scale NET Power plants.
