Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has received an order for three M701 DA gas turbine/generator sets to be installed at the 400-MW Zerger natural gas-fired power plant in Turkmenistan.

The Zerger plant is owned by Turkmenenergo, the national utility under control of Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Energy. It will be built in the Lebap Province, about 600 kilometers northeast of the Turkmen capital Ashgabat. Once online, the Turkmen government will export power to Afghanistan under a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA). The PPA is part of a project intended to assist in reconstruction after the Afghan civil war.

Turkmenistan has seen steady economic growth in recent years. The government is aggressively promoting development of high valued-added natural gas products, as well as diversification of exports and sales channels. The country is also undertaking initiatives to strengthen ties with its neighbors, as demonstrated by the PPA with Afghanistan.

Sumitomo Corporation will serve as the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor. The plant is expected to go online in 2018.
