Westar Energy Buying Additional 200-MW Kansas Wind Energy

Westar Energy (NYSE: WR) has reached an agreement with a NextEra Energy Resources (NYSE: NEE) affiliate to buy another 200 MW of Kansas wind energy.

Westar will purchase power generated at Kingman County's Kingman Wind Energy Center, expected in service by early 2017.

“Our customers will benefit from this low cost wind energy,” said Mark Ruelle, Westar president and chief executive officer. “Wind energy development brings jobs and investment to our rural communities.”

Per the transaction, Westar has the option to buy half the project before completion.

The acquisition helps Westar's wind portfolio surpass 1,700 MW.
