ABB Contracted to Supply ESS to SEPTA Train Network

Exelon subsidiary Constellation has chosen ABB to engineer, manufacture and commission seven ENVILINE™ Energy Storage Systems (ESS) with Lithium-ion battery storage from Saft America.

This project, which is being financed through a 20-year battery services agreement with Constellation, is among the first commercially deployed battery storage systems in transit operation.

The ENVILINE™ ESS captures energy from a train’s brakes and reuses it for acceleration.  It provides 8.75 MW of frequency regulation support on the PJM electric grid and will recover train braking energy on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) train network.

The contract brings ABB’s installed base of operating train braking energy recovery systems to 15 MW.
