SunPower's New Colorado Solar Plant Reaches Commercial Operations

SunPower has reached commercial operations at its new 50-MW Hooper solar photovoltaic power plant in Colorado’s San Luis Valley.

Xcel Energy has a power purchase agreement for the electricity generated by the plant, which is expected to supply power for up to 13,500 average Colorado homes.

SunPower designed and constructed the plant on 320 acres, installing a SunPower ® Oasis ® Power Plant system.  Oasis is a fully-integrated, modular solar power block engineered to rapidly deploy utility-scale solar projects while optimizing land use.

The technology includes SunPower’s robotic solar panel cleaning capability, which uses 75 percent less water than traditional methods and can help improve system performance by 15 percent.

SunPower will perform operations and maintenance services onsite and monitor power production from the company's remote operations control center in Austin, Texas.

SunPower previously constructed two other plants for Xcel Energy customers in Colorado’s San Luis Valley.  The 19-MW Greater Sandhill plant came online in 2010, and the 30-MW San Luis Valley Solar Ranch has been in operation since 2011.
