The U.K. said it will turn more to nuclear and natural gas-fired power plants to complement renewable energy sources as the country aims to shut down all coal-fired generation by 2025.
U.K. Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said the U.K.’s energy policy will call for a limit on the use of coal power by 2023 and phase it out completely by 2025 to cut carbon emissions during a speech. Rudd also said the U.K. would develop more nuclear power plants, including projects at Hinkley Point C, Wylfa and Moorside, that could provide up to 30 percent of low-carbon power through the 2030s and create 30,000 new jobs.

Rudd also called for increased exploration of shale gas to cut down on natural gas imports. Future plans also call for 10 GW of offshore wind installed by 2020 so long as the technology becomes more cost-competitive without subsidies.
“Climate change is a big problem, it needs big technologies,” Rudd said in a speech.
EDF Energy responded to the speech, saying that it will continue to make investments in many generating sources, including nuclear, natural gas and renewables.  EDF is investing in new nuclear builds at Hinkley Point C, Sizewell and Bradwell in the U.K.
