DONG Energy Proposes 100-Turbine Wind Farm off the Coast of Martha's Vinyard

The world’s largest offshore wind farm developer is proposing a 100-turbine project about 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.

DONG Energy A/S recently acquired a lease for a stretch of ocean designated by the U.S. government for wind farms.

Dubbed Bay State Wind, the project -- DONG Energy's first North American venture -- could generate up to 1,000 MW of electricity.

The company has not disclosed the size of its wind turbines but tells the Boston Globe they’d be “barely visible on a clear day” from Martha’s Vinyard’s south shore, unlike the controversial Cape Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island, which is closer to shore.

DONG Energy developed the world’s first offshore wind farm off the coast of Denmark in the early 1990s.  The company has since constructed more than 30 percent of the world’s offshore wind capacity.

DONG Energy has yet to file any applications for the project, which is expected to cost billions of dollars, but the company says it would independently finance construction and not rely on investors.

On the other side of the country, Trident Winds LLC has proposed the first ocean wind farm off the coast of California.  The project includes the installation of 100 floating wind turbines, each about 636 feet tall, about 15 miles off the San Luis Obispo County shoreline.
