DOE Gives Support for New Reactor Design, Supplements Loan Guarantees

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will help develop advanced nuclear reactor designs through a new program, and will supplement the existing nuclear loan guarantee solicitation. The announcements were made during the White House summit.
DOE, the Office of Technology Transitions and the Clean Energy Impact Investment Center plan to accelerate the development of advanced designs through the Office of Nuclear Energy’s Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN). GAIN will serve as the access point for the nuclear industry and entrepreneurs to benefit from the broad range of capabilities--people, facilities, materials, data, and land--across the DOE complex and its national labs.
DOE is also supplementing the $12.5 billion Advanced Nuclear Energy Projects Solicitation loan guarantees for construction of eligible advanced nuclear reactors, small modular reactors, uprates and upgrades at existing facilities, and front-end nuclear facilities. The supplement clarifies that project costs incurred as part of the licensing process with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission can be considered eligible costs that may be financed with a DOE loan guarantee. The licensing process includes design certification, construction permit, and combined construction and operating licenses.
